Westerdok, De Nieuwe Reael
Op de beperkte ruimte van het eiland moest een omvangrijk programma gerealiseerd worden. De bestaande beschikbare ruimte werd oorspronkelijk verdeeld in 2 gebieden door een drukke verkeersverbinding, de aansluiting op de A10 vanaf het Centraal Station.
Voor De Nieuwe Reaal is gekozen voor een verkaveling met een hoge dichtheid die nog het meest lijkt op de Jordaan; smalle straten met individuele mutifunctionele panden. De smalle straten lopen dwars over het eiland en bieden zicht op het Westerdok en het IJ. De historisch belangrijke Galgenstraat op het Prinseneiland vindt z’n vervolg op de Nieuwe Reael. De bebouwing wordt ontsloten door straten voor voetgangers, fietsers en bestemmingsverkeer. De verkeersstroom van en naar de A10 is onder maaiveld gebracht. Deze doorgaande verbindingsweg is tevens de gemeenschappelijke entrée tot de parkeergarages voor de bebouwing op het eiland. Aan de IJ-oever en in het Westerdok is plaats voor de scheepvaart en woonschepen met afmeer mogelijkheden loodrecht op het eiland.
Westerdok, The New Reael
In the limited area of the island a major program has been proposed by the municipality of Amsterdam. The existing available space was originally divided into 2 regions by busy traffic, the connection to the A10 from the Central Station.
We made a proposal for the area as an housing estate with a high density, similar to the Jordan (an existing area in the centre of Amsterdam) and characterized by narrow streets with individual and multifunctional buildings. The narrow streets are running across the island and offer a view on the Westerdok and the IJ. The historically important Galgestraat on Prinseneiland finds its sequel on the New Reael. The narrow streets give acces to the buildings for pedestrians, cyclists and local traffic. The main route with heavy traffic to and from the A10 is positioned in a gully. This gully gives at the same time acces to the entrances of the carparks of the new buildings on the island.
Mooring possibilities, perpendicular to the island, are offered to all kinds of shipping and houseboats.
